Boudica Socks

Finally I can show you some knitting!

I have finished the socks for Anne and they are SO lovely! May I present Boudica Socks.

These socks are named after Boudica, the rebel Celtic queen who fought the Roman Empire after they refused her daughters’ claim to the throne of the Iceni people. A Celtic knotwork-inspired braid runs up each side from the toe to the upper cuff, where travelling stitches and a horizontal braid hide calf increases, finished off by a rolled edge.

Pattern: My own, will be available May 1st as a kit-of-the-month from Wooly Wonka Fibers. At some future point I will also be offering it as a stand alone pattern. These socks are knit from the toe up to the top of the cuff. The final toe increases are integrated in the beginning of the braid that continues up the sides. The horizontal braid is pretty nifty too (thanks Susan!). The heel is the same base as my heel flap tutorial. **EDIT** Wow! Anne is speedy! Preorders for the kit are up at her shop!

Yarn: Wooly Wonka handdyed Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) superwash sock yarn in the River colorway. Subtly shifting blues that are PERFECT for this sock. They add interest while not taking away from the texture of the braids. Also, you will not believe this yarn is superwash! It’s buttery soft and silky. I LOVE it!

Needles: Set of 5 2.00 mm (US 0) Crystal Palace 6″ bamboo double pointed needles.

Gauge: 9.5 sts and 14 rows per inch in stockinette.

Verdict: I love them a lot. Some of you may recognize that they are a reincarnation of the celtic braid socks I was working on earlier this year. Those (thankfully) died and these were born from the ashes.

I did some spinning this weekend too (plying actually), so I’ll hopefully have some of that to show you tomorrow as well as some acquisitions that I’ve brought home recently.

Those are gorgeous Mim! Toe-up…hmmm, trying to get me out of my comfort zone are you? hehehehe

They are very pretty and delicate. I hope Boudica had a pretty delicate side too!

They look great!

They are wonderful! I really like them, every detail is right.

Beautiful! I can’t wait until you have just the pattern available.7

Bodacious socks! Very pretty.

those are beautiful socks! hmm.. can i justify the kit with my sock yarn stash?

Beautiful Mim and Anne!

Oh, lovely! I am especially enamored of the celtic knotwork inspired braid. :) I’m thinking a foray into the shop will be needed when this becomes available.

I don’t often (ever) do this, but I’ve just ordered the kit. Thank you for fuelling my habit!

Those are beautiful. Once the pattern’s available by itself, I might actually knit socks that aren’t just stockinette and ribbing…

Yup, I never order sock-kits either, but you just made me do it! (Wicked Mim! Adding to my to-knit list!!!) *thanks!*

Those are very cute, and look really soft. I like the rolled top especially.

I was thinking about finally joining the Icarus bandwagon and wonder if you have any advice about determining yardage… as in I have exactly 500 yd of handspun (maybe fingering weight?) and no idea how to adjust the middle pattern section so that I use exactly all of it and am neither short nor have a ton left over. I suspect swatching will be in order.

Love the socks. Ordered the kit. What the hell, it’s my birthday tomorrow. So there.

Great pattern. Really.

Mim those socks are GORGEOUS!! Anne’s lovely colorway works so nicely with the pattern.

Gorgeous socks! That’s a great pattern, and I’m sure I’ll be seeing a lot of them around very soon!

Mim, they’re stunning. I so want to make a pair to match some amber jewelry I have.

Gorgeous as usual!

You already know what I think, right? :) Corn dogs, babe.

Awesome job! What a great collaboration – I better order before she sells out. Wiki – not so much; I just don’t have enough time online as it is:)

These are just lovely. The Celtic braid looks super-intricate.

Um, ordered… Gorgeous!

They’re gorgeous AND toe-up?!? I swoon!

Those are gorgeous! I love them! :)

Hi I love the socks. I watched the History Channels special on Warrior Queen Boudica. So when I saw the socks I had to be one of the first preorders. I also just purchased the Seraphim Shawl pattern to make for my step-mother for her 50th Birthday. Keep the beautiful designs coming.

Amy

Wow! Those are beautiful. What a wonderful pattern.

Boy, am I doing damage the day the Bustalong ends….I ordered a kit! I think they’d look splendid in kilt hose, with the traveling stitches in a turned down cuff!

I LOVE these socks. They are beautiful. My birthday is coming up…mmmmm.
Love,
Mom
